The World Chess Championship 2018 is an chess match between the reigning world champion since 2013, Magnus Carlsen, and challenger Fabiano Caruana to determine the World Chess Champion. The 12-game match, organized by FIDE and World Chess, will be played in London between 9 and 28 November 2018 with a prize fund of over EUR 1 mln. The Match takes place every two years.
Magnus Carlsen won three consecutive rapid games to win the match and retain his World Championship title.


Magnus Carlsen offers draw in Game 12 after 31 moves and three hours, Best of the twelve games contest deadlocked at 6-all after 12 draws, World championship to be settled Wednesday in tie-breaker. Carlsen will play White in the first tie-break game.

After 12 games and 12 draws, American Fabiano Caruana is seeking to take the title from Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.

After drawing their final match in London on Monday, they head to a series of fast-paced tie-breakers, culminating in a game type known as "Armageddon".

If he wins, Caruana will be the first US world champion since Bobby Fischer in 1972.

But in Wednesday's tie-breaker, he will again face a fierce title defence from Carlsen, who has been champion since 2013 and is the top-ranked player in the world.

On top of the prestige that comes with the title, the pair are also battling over a €1 million (£880,000) cash prize.

Tie Break Rules:

According to FIDE, If the scores are level after the regular 12 games, after a new drawing of colors, four tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move. The players do not need to record the moves. An arbiter shall record the moves. If the scores are [still] level. then, after a new drawing of colors, a match of 2 games shall be played with a time control of 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment after each move. In case of a level score, another 2-game match will be played to determine a winner. If still there is no winner after 5 such matches (total 10 games), one sudden-death game will be played. [in which] The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.
